This is Ina May Gaskin. She has been called the “mother of authentic midwifery.” In 1971 she and her husband moved from San Francisco and founded a commune in Tennessee called The Farm. The community was based on values such as non-violence and respect for the earth. There, she started a midwifery center which has gained international attention. She is the only female and only non-physician to have a birthing technique named after her. The Gaskin Maneuver describes a position where the mother supports herself on all fours in order to resolve shoulder dystocia. Although she is a certified midwife and not a nurse, I think she’s a pretty cool lady and one of my personal role models.
