Currently, there is a bill being pushed in New York legislation referred to as the “BSN in 10” initiative. If it passes, the state will eliminate associate’s degree/diploma RN programs and replace them with BSN education programs. All nurses in the state currently operating with two year degrees will be given 10 years to complete an RN-to-BSN program.
This push to raise the educational standards of nurses can be seen across the nation but if it passes, New York will be the first state to have put a plan into action. The idea is to boost the number of nurses entering clinical specialties, as there is an increase in demand of highly skilled nursing. The BSN requirement would also enable more people to become nursing educators, therefore contributing to the end of the nursing shortage. Backing this bill, statistical evidence of better patient outcomes in environments that employ exclusively BSN graduates.
My question is, do you agree with this piece of legislation? I understand all of the potential benefits, but at the same time there are a lot of roles in nursing which definitely do not require 4 years of education.
